Props and accessories:

Some children may need an interesting item to keep them engaged in the photo session.  If you have a tripod available, you can free up a hand to blow bubbles while you snap away with the other.  No tripod?  Think outside the box...how about drawing a face on the bottoms of your feet and having a "conversation" with your kids while you sit and take pictures, or maybe pulling out that old kazoo and making some silly sounds?

My kids like to help prepare any props we will be using.  For example, they like to decorate a large heart for Valentine's Day and take turns peeking out from behind to "surprise" the camera. :)  Our first roses of the spring are generally popping out around Mother's Day, so the kids stand by and help me choose the roses to cut for our photo session. (Watch for thorns!)  My son likes to clean up his bike and helmet for the Father's Day photos we take at his bike race.  When my kids are invested in the photo shoot, they are much more cooperative.
